Chances are that if you live in the Baltimore metropolitan area, your go to airline (at least before the pandemic) is Southwest. They regularly have the most economical fares, they don’t nickel and dime you with fees, changing flights isn’t a problem and if you need to cancel your money isn’t at risk. They simply park your dollars on your account for a year to use at a more convenient time.
And while the cattle call approach they use to shepherd passengers into their unassigned seats is a little weird, you can’t really fault their business model — one that keeps them afloat during a time when the seeds of financial ruin could easily take root in fiscal soil that invites it.
We hope for recovery for all businesses but as it relates to Southwest, their positive outlook and willingness to redefine themselves make them a favorite to emerge from our COVID-19 world as victors. It’s hard not to like a company that is so approachable that they can laugh at themselves.
Check out this video taken as a Southwest crew prepared for takeoff. I can’t help but to think of an old Jimmy Buffet lyric after watching this vid: “If we weren’t all crazy we would go insane.”
Here’s to your sanity everyone!
And here’s to Southwest Airlines.
